Akhnif El Glaoui Cooperative – Guardians of Taznakht’s Rug-Making Heritage

Founded in 1990, the Akhnif El Glaoui Cooperative is a proud guardian of Morocco’s rich weaving traditions, based in the heart of Taznakht, in the Ouarzazate region. For more than three decades, the cooperative has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the ancestral art of handmade Moroccan rugs, a craft deeply rooted in the Berber culture of the High Atlas.

Each rug produced by the women artisans of Akhnif El Glaoui tells a unique story. Handwoven with patience and care, the rugs reflect generations of knowledge passed down from mother to daughter, blending traditional techniques with the authenticity of natural wool and vibrant plant-based dyes. The cooperative specializes in the renowned Taznakht rugs, known for their fine weaving, striking geometric patterns, and warm earthy tones inspired by the surrounding desert and mountains.

Beyond being a space for production, Akhnif El Glaoui is also a symbol of empowerment and community. The cooperative brings together talented local women who transform their artistic skills into sustainable livelihoods, providing financial independence and preserving a cultural heritage that might otherwise be at risk of disappearing. Every rug created is not only a piece of home décor but also a piece of history—an authentic Moroccan treasure that carries the spirit of the land and its people.

Over the years, Akhnif El Glaoui has earned recognition for its commitment to quality, authenticity, and ethical production. The cooperative has welcomed visitors from Morocco and abroad who seek to experience firsthand the beauty of Taznakht weaving and to support fair trade practices.

Today, with more than 30 years of experience, Akhnif El Glaoui Cooperative continues to share the timeless beauty of Moroccan rugs with the world—celebrating tradition while weaving a future for its artisans and their community.
